During this course the students will learn more about how to create successful and appealing designs through individualised feedback on a mini project. At the start of the course they will build their very own world for which they will create designs OR they can use a pre-existing world which the student can receive specific feedback.

Due each week. Expect to spend 8-10 hrs/wk viewing lectures, Q&A, and time on assignments.
PREREQUISITES
The student should have a good foundation in fundamental drawing skills such as an understanding of perspective and anatomy.
MATERIALS
Adobe Photoshop or similar 2D art software.

Getting familiar with the overall design pipeline | Introduction to thumbnailing and learning more about different techniques | Learning more about how to start a project | Gathering and using research the appropriate way for concept design

Learning about the different fundamentals of design such as appealing shapes, shape language and adding variation and intrigue to our designs | Learning about the value of self-identifying your mistakes and how to rectify them during the design process

Learning how to convey a story through visual cues | Set dressing a character vs set dressing an environment | Using detail to lead the eye through your design

Communicate a feeling or an idea through color | Breaking down appealing color palettes and analyzing why they work | Getting familiar with using ratio's in your color choices | Colorizing your design

Learning how to use either design aesthetics or functionality as a starting point for your design process. | Discussion about which approach is preferable in which scenario

Discussion about what a style is | Learning how to dissect an existing style and apply it to your own workflow | Using inspiration in your work | The importance of consistency

Demonstration on rendering and polishing your design | Getting familiar with the use of light and color in designs

Constructing a design sheet | Discussion about technical breakouts and when you need them | Closing thoughts

Arne Billen is a concept art teacher at Syntra AB Belgium as well as a freelance game concept artist. After finishing his master's degree in physiotherapy he decided to take a new turn in life and pursue his passion for art. He has made over 1200 paintings and has become a part-time lecturer on figure drawing and anatomy, digital painting and set & prop design. He loves to explore new methods of creating art and is still hard at work at getting better every day.
