Why learning anatomy is important.

This course introduces participants to the study and sketching of human anatomy in a dynamic, loose manner. Emphasis will be placed on using knowledge and study of the skeletal and muscular anatomy in order to enhance and build on the dynamic gesture that the figure sketch is built upon. Anatomy resources introduced and studied from will range from Renaissance to 20th century artists, including master Disney animator and designer Marc Davis, who Walt Disney called his 'Renaissance Man'.


By the end of the course students will have gained: 1. an understanding of the human skeletal structure 2. an understanding of the human muscular structure, including muscle origins and insertions 3. an ability to sketch the human figure and its skeletal and muscular structures in a loose, dynamic manner 4. an understanding and appreciation of how many of the 12 Animation Principles can be applied to sketching the human figure anatomy dynamically 5. a body of loose human figure anatomy studies that reflect a firm grasp of the skeletal and muscular structure.

Mike Wiesmeier has been working in the animation industry since 1991. Mike’s production work has included interactive, commercial, games, and feature animation projects, including six features at Walt Disney Feature Animation, work as a supervisor on a traditionally animated feature film in Barcelona, Spain, and most recently on a AAA game, interactive theme park ride, and Netflix series projects in Montréal. Mike’s teaching career began while working at Walt Disney Feature Animation. In the years since he has taught animation, life drawing, animal drawing, and figure sculpture at institutions worldwide including The Art Institutes of California, The Getty Center museum, The Huntington Library, Gnomon School of Visual Effects, Syn Studio École d’Art in Montréal, and Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, Italy.
